HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS. For 232 years we have protected and defended this country from all enemies both foreign and domestic. Here are a few thoughts as I look back over the years.
While most people sat at home in their easy chair, we lived in dirty holes and behind sandbags. Our transportation wasn't a BMW or VW. It was tanks, planes and helicopters. Our work wasn't in an office that had a cleaning crew, air conditioning and worrying whether making a decision would cost us our jobs. Our work was closing with the enemy and destroying his effectiveness, often at the expense of our own lives.
While many people were home demonstrating against this country and its commitment, we were demonstrating to the world that this greatest nation on Earth was willing to fight for the freedoms that most of its citizens took for granted and most of the rest of the world didn't have. While most Americans watched TV, we watched tracers criss-crossing.
There's no such thing as an ex-Marine. As the years go by we may be older and less slim but we are still Marines. There is not a one of us that, if our country called once more, would not go. Remember - In the Marine Corps, we run toward the sound of shooting - not away from it.
The next time you see a Marine, thank him for his willingness to place himself or herself in harm's way so that you can be safe.
SEMPER FI and GOD BLESS THE MARINES!!
